Kate Middleton took the title Princess of Wales from King Charles III upon her accession to the throne. As the spouse of heir Prince William, Kate is now one of the institution’s many longest-serving royals. The only girl in the family with a senior position is the Queen’s consort Camilla Parker Bowles.
With the title change, and a rise in status in the family, insiders say Kate wants to “take a long-term view while following her personal path”. Nonetheless, the princess’ life is strict. Here’s a list of 10 general problems Kate Middleton can’t do as Princess of Wales.
1. Kate Middleton cannot vote in political elections
Members of the royal family are not allowed to share their political views with the public and must remain impartial in the affairs of British authorities. Through the session, the Princess of Wales was barred from voting in political elections.
As Prince Harry revealed when he moved to the US ahead of the 2020 presidential election, members of the royal family have also been banned from working for the political workplace.
“But in many cases, you probably don’t know that my entire life has been incapable of being able to vote within the UK,” Harry said on a UK unbiased basis.
2. No selfies with the Princess of Wales
Working royals typically meet the public while on duty, so they’ll no doubt meet excited followers who want selfies. Nonetheless, all royal followers should rely on handshakes and greetings when meeting with Kate Middleton or other members of the royal family. Just not allowed to take selfies with the princess.
As royal commentator Victoria Arbiter defined it to Insider; “The royal family will have face-to-face interactions at all times, not those clamoring for selfies.”
3. Neither is signed
Loyal followers willing to take a selfie with the princess may even be disappointed. Due to the danger of copying and forgery, royals are not expected to sign autographs – although they are often called upon to do so.
Under the direction of the Crown, Kate can only issue official paperwork authorized in advance by the monarch.
4. Kate Middleton cannot have her personal social media accounts
The Princess of Wales is an avid photographer who enjoys taking pictures of her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. However, unlike other moms in their 40s, Kate isn’t allowed to have her personal social media accounts to share her daily footage and movies, or whatever else she wants to post.
As an alternative, Kate and William share joint social media accounts managed by their colleagues. The world has seen the classic story of the palace PR workplace.
5. The Princess of Wales doesn’t get paid
That’s likely because considering the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from the royal family turned out to be financially justified, it’s not shocking. Older royals like Kate will not be allowed to profit from their work or earn any salary.
As an alternative to earning extra income by licensing the images she shoots, Kate’s work is printed through official court channels and he or she doesn’t earn a cent.
6. Kate Middleton can’t eat shellfish
Clearly, the Princess of Wales is very sporty and well-matched, and she has benefited from the fact that the royal chef prepares her wholesome meals every day. Still, Kate and the rest of the royal family will not be allowed to eat shellfish due to the risk of food poisoning.
“Once you’re in public service, giving up seafood is a very sensible diversion. We don’t need any royal to react critically to food poisoning, especially when she’s travelling overseas,” royal housekeeper Grant Harold told The Post. Girls and Houses magazine.
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there were far more dietary guidelines at Buckingham Palace. Former royal chef Darren McGrady said they “could never serve food with garlic or too much onion” and “no potatoes, rice or pasta for dinner”.
King Charles also changed the court menu in 2008, when he banned the French dish foie gras over animal welfare concerns.
7. She should follow the “stop spending” rule
When it comes to dining, Kate — or anyone dining with the monarch — has to abide by another odd rule. When the king decides to finish his meal, everyone else at the table should observe and stop eating.
It’s a rule Queen Elizabeth is well aware of, and he or she has proven it at least at one event. Hi! magazine, Paul Burrell, a former royal butler, recalls one time a visitor piled fruit on his plate throughout dessert because he didn’t notice the Queen had finished her meal.
When he observed it for the last time, he was horrified. But the queen only took a sip of her wine, and it wouldn’t be so uncomfortable.
8. The Princess of Wales can’t go to bed when she wants to sleep
The rule may have been revised due to the days of the former Princess of Wales, Kate’s late mother-in-law Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth. Nonetheless, we thought we’d point it out because it’s a rule we don’t count on.
The Queen’s former private secretary, Sir William Heseltine, writes in his e-book Australian Royals Going to bed earlier than Her Majesty is considered very dangerous etiquette.
“No one noticed the race was going to bed earlier than the Queen,” Heseltine wrote. “For Diana, the long royal evening was a torture. It could have been an hour or so in the lounge, with everyone sitting around and chatting. Diana was taken to such extremes that she made for herself Justify and go to bed, which is considered quite dangerous to go to bed earlier than the Queen.”
9. No Monopoly Princess
Kate is known for being quite aggressive, but not so much when it comes to board game Monopoly. According to the Daily Telegraph, royals will not be allowed to play Monopoly due to the late Queen’s rules. She found the sport “too vicious” so she banned it from the palace.
10. Kate Middleton can’t pack on the PDA with Prince William
Royal followers noticed Kate and William kissing on the palace balcony on their wedding anniversary in April 2011. Since then, however, the number of PDAs the couple has shared has been virtually nil. Within the royal family, public expressions of affection are often overlooked.
