AG Ken Paxton said video showed Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan “intoxicated” during a session, and the Texas attorney general accused the state speaker of presiding while “obviously intoxicated.”
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday called on House Speaker Dade Phelan to resign, saying he was “obviously drunk” while presiding over the Texas House.
Video posted to Twitter showed Mr Phelan having difficulty speaking at a House session on Friday (May 19).
Mr. Phelan seemed to confuse his words, slurring them, which at times eluded him.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Mr. Paxton called on Mr. Phelan to resign at the end of the legislative session, saying: “Texans watched him preside over the Texas House of Representatives in a visibly debilitated drunken state performance is frustrating.
His conduct negatively impacted the legislative process and constituted a failure to discharge his duty to the public,” Mr Paxton added.
