“Don’t Be Afraid Darling” (Warner Bros. Discovery) outperformed studio and monitoring forecasts a bit, taking No. 1 this weekend with roughly the same number as last weekend’s “Girls King” (Sony).
Gina Prince-Byswood’s film about African girl warriors tops Olivia Wilde’s much-discussed 1950s drama Stepford Wives by Florence Pugh, Harry Types Starring with Chris Pine, the effect is considered robust, in part due to lower expectations.
After much hype surrounding its Venetian efficiency, “Dear” grew into a live workplace with consensus opening weekend gross sales of $20 million or more. Still, both its preview and Friday’s results showed above-average declines. These were exaggerated by Monday’s extra IMAX fan screening.

“Girl King”

Despite its decline, “Honey” received firm help from younger girls much like the “King of Girls” got help from older (especially black) girls. Each film is an authentic mid-budget drama, and the environment is always seen as a threat.
This is WBD’s fifth No. 1 film out of 12 months of WBD’s five theatrical releases. Three are franchise and two are authentic (“Darling” and “Elvis”). DC comedians and other franchise-related films have to thrive on WBD, but as it restructures under new management and announces additional theatrical releases, the success of an authentic movie like “Dear” is critical. WBD may hope that future success will involve considerably less excitement.
“Avatar” (Disney) is the second “new release” of the week, almost all dates in 3D, as a trailer for the sequel three months later. Only a few people will be able to see its unique format inside, which makes the reintroduction especially useful.
It grossed $10 million at the box office and #Three was okay this weekend. That brings his adjusted total to $900 million, placing him 12th all-time and now ahead of “Empire Bash” and “Ben-Hur.” It’s the largest amount this century, and despite over $1.2 billion, it would love to get the director’s “Titanic.” Outstanding — it grossed $30 million worldwide, as did Don’t Look Darling.
“Girl King” got a good second place, with a drop of 42%, to $11.145 million and $363,000 respectively. The other seven films in the top 10 saw much smaller declines (as the top-ranked films typically drop 50% or more in their second weekend). The #5 title “Pearl” (A24) and #6 “See How They Run” (Searchlight), two different openings last week, saw sharp declines in initial positives, both just below 40%.
A24’s low-budget-style films tend to outperform their regular releases, and “Pearl”‘s good reputation (and Martin Scorsese’s help) sparked curiosity. Also notable was “The Savage” (Disney), which entered its third weekend at No. 4, down just 24%.
There are many positive situations in specific character films, but the full question remains. Total revenue rose from $51 million to $60 million this weekend. For a similar weekend in 2019, it was just 48%, while the four-week rolling determination for the past three years has remained at 45%.

“Moon Daydream”
neon
Neon expanded Moonage Daydream from an IMAX-only date last weekend to include $922,000 and 563 additional theaters, but was down 25% overall. At $2.6 million, the David Bowie documentary was more than double the nonfiction film’s second-best 12-month box office take.
Professional films began to regain their footing in October, especially when they hit traditional platforms. By then, few estimates will likely be reported.
