Florida Man Wakeboards Down Flooded Street as Hurricane Ian approaches

Social media customers have tuned in after a Florida man was photographed water skiing on the street as Hurricane Ian quickly approached.

The video, shared on Twitter Tuesday afternoon, shows a person wearing a long-sleeved shirt and shorts water skiing in the back of a pickup truck while navigating the flooded streets of the Marathon, more than expected in the southern part of the state. Hurricane Replacement at 8pm

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the tropical storm hit the southwestern tip of Florida around 8 p.m. local time on Tuesday, and heavy rain is expected across much of the peninsula over the next few days.

The NHC is forecasting 6 to 8 inches of precipitation in the Florida Keys and southern Florida by Thursday, while up to 24 inches of remote rain could be seen in central and northeastern Florida. Another 4 to 8 inches of rain is possible along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina in Japan.

As of Tuesday night, the NHC had recorded hurricane winds of 120 mph.

The NHC also warned residents that only the storm surge and swells from Hurricane Ian will cause normally dry areas near Florida’s west coast to inundate Tuesday night. 6 to 12 feet of flooding is possible in the Sarasota County area.

Hurricane Ian was upgraded to a Category 3 storm within a day after hitting western Cuba at around 4:30 a.m., with speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, according to NBC News.

The NHC said the hurricane is expected to make landfall in western Florida near Sarasota on Wednesday afternoon and move northeast through central Florida, passing Tampa on Thursday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said 2.5 million Florida residents fled their homes Tuesday morning due to Hurricane Ian. Some counties that were in the expected path of the hurricane ordered mandatory evacuations on Monday and Tuesday, while others followed voluntary evacuations. Essential evacuations for coastal Hillsboro County, including the town of Tampa, began Monday.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff warned Tuesday that residents who did not comply with mandatory evacuation orders and those in areas most vulnerable to flooding will not be able to leave the area before 9 p.m.
