Pope Francis gives his blessing as he attends the world’s first “Educational Eco-City” conference led by “Scholas Occurrentes” at the Vatican.
Pope Francis missed Friday’s meeting because of a fever, the Vatican said.
There were no details on the severity of Francis’ condition. The last time he had a severe fever was in March, when the 86-year-old pope was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with acute bronchitis. He was given intravenous antibiotics and discharged three days later.
A Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity and saying he was not authorized to speak about the pope’s health, said Francis did not greet anyone in the audience Friday “due to his feverish state.”
No formal audience was scheduled for Friday, but Francis maintained a schedule of solitary, private and informal meetings with those he hosted at the residence.
Francis has had a busy week, presiding over a meeting of the Italian bishops’ conference, attending Thursday afternoon’s gathering with his Scholas Occurentes, and meeting many other bishops and visiting dignitaries.
He plans to preside at Sunday’s Pentecostal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, and amid signs that he is expected to recover quickly, the Vatican announced Friday that new formal talks with Italian President Sergio Mattarella were scheduled for Monday. held.
