“Nobody knows how movies are made — even though everyone thinks they do,” Hanks advised PEOPLE. “I’ve done a lot of films (4 of them I believe are pretty good), but I’m still amazed at how the film is presented overall. From the flash of a concept to the flickering of the screen on the monitor, the whole thing is a miracle.”
Hanks added: “Filmmaking can be a very tough job, a long time, made up of so many happy moments with all sorts of self-loathing. It’s the best job on the planet and it’s mine The most complex job known.”
Hanks said in advance that the concept of a achievable Forrest Gump sequel was shelved almost immediately after the success of the first film, which is considered a top 4 record for his “pretty good” film.
“I have to say, for a long time, we were trying to talk about another ‘Forrest Gump’ that lasted a full 40 minutes,” Hanks shared. “We’re never going to say, ‘Come on, guys.'”
In a time with quite a few sequels, reboots and reruns, Hanks added that there was no “dedication” to reprise his famous role as Forrest after the unique 1994 film, during which he also Out-of-pocket purchases of select scenes like Forrest’s legendary Running America.
“One of the things I’ve done really well is that I’ve never signed a deal that had a contractual commitment to a sequel,” Hanks said. “I kept saying, ‘Guys, if there’s a purpose, let’s do it. But you can’t put pressure on me. There’s a pure tendency, considered one of pure business, to claim, ‘Hey, you just made it, so do it again and you’ll make it too.'”
