During his interim tenure in the military, Dahmer completed resident training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

In July 1979, he was posted to Baumhold, West Germany, where he served as a medic in the 2nd Battalion, 68th Armoured Regiment, 8th Infantry Division until his retirement.

After being discharged from the hospital, Dahmer headed to Miami’s waterfront, Florida, to find a job at a deli, but was quickly kicked out of the motel he was staying in for failing to pay his lease. Dahmer returned to Ohio in September 1981, six months after he was discharged from the military.

He moved in with his father Lionel and stepmother Sally, but was arrested for drunkenness and disorderly conduct just two weeks after his return. He was fined $60 and given a 10-day conditional prison sentence.

After two months there, Dahmer was sent to live with his grandmother in West Allis, Wisconsin, in the hope that he could start over.

The problem briefly arose with Dahmer, who was working as a phlebotomist at the Milwaukee Plasma Heart Center before launching 10 months later.

On November 20, 1987, Dahmer murdered 25-year-old Steven Tuomi at the Ambassador Resort in Milwaukee and was subsequently arrested for indecent propaganda, indecent and lewd conduct, and wrongdoing.

By the time of his arrest on July 22, 1991, Dahmer would have committed 15 more murders.
